Why Bardock Looks Different In Dragon Ball Super Broly?
The second trailer of Dragon Ball Super Broly gave a lot of new information about the upcoming movie. Among these things will be Vegeta, Goku, and Broly’s glimpse of childhoods and Frieza’s tenure in Planet Vegeta. We will also see the Ginyu Force flash those poses once again. But what’s more interesting to see is Goku’s parents: Gine and Bardock finally reaching the canon realm. The biggest question right now is: why does Bardock look different?
Dragon Ball Super Broly Meets Dragon Ball Minus
It seems like Dragon Ball Super: Broly is trying to incorporate two non-canon parts into the canon scene: Dragon Ball Z: Bardock – The Father of Goku (a TV special) and Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan (a movie). For over two decades, Bardock’s image in everywhere he appeared is something like the left picture below. His trademark scar is always accompanied by his trademark red bandana and his unique Saiyan Armor. However, the bandana and the Saiyan armor will not be used in the 20th movie.
The reason for this is because Dragon Ball Super Broly will use another material: Dragon Ball Minus. Dragon Ball Minus was released last 2014 and is the final chapter in the special manga included in the Jaco the Galactic Patrolman which was released by Akira Toriyama. These chapters are placed in the timeline even before Frieza met the Saiyans. It can be considered as Bardock and Gine’s first official introduction in the series.
A little bit of Goku’s childhood is also not spent with Grandpa Gohan because, in Dragon Ball Minus, he spent three years in an incubator. Fortunately, it will also mean that Broly will not have a crying baby phobia and might not actually hate Kakarot in the upcoming Broly movie. Frieza did not even attack the Planet Vegeta until one month after Goku was sent on Earth. Last but not the least, Frieza is not just afraid of the “Super Saiyan” concept, but also the “Super Saiyan God.”
Dragon Ball Super Broly will come on December 14, 2018, in Japan and January 16, 2019, in the US.
